Safety and Emissions
Sometimes it can be confusing with all the different rules about safety and emissions testing when exactly you may need it and what exactly needs to be in good working order. It can actually differ from state to state what is needed, so, I'll be focusing on the requirements for Utah.
I was surprised to find out that the times from safety and emissions can actually be different depending on the year of your car. The year of the car will make all the difference in safety and emissions.
In Utah the years that you need to have your safety done for a car any older than 8 years is every year. For a car that is younger it is required only every other year.
Emissions is only slightly different. If your car is 6 years old or younger you only have to bring it in every other year. If it is older than 6 years it is required to be tested every year.
If you wait too long to get both done till after your registration has expired, you'll have to head over to your local DMV and get a temporary registration card so that you'll have some extra time to get your safety and emissions done. This costs a little extra money though.
Little problems can cause your safety and emissions testing to fail. You'll then have to get it fixed before you can register your car.
If you want to make sure that your car is going to pass, go the extra mile by constantly doing maintenance when needed, and really taking care of your car. Even if a light comes on get it checked out and don't wait because your engine is trying to tell you something.
Don't wait too long to get your safety and emissions done. If you have realized that it is coming up, start on it right away. You can get a ticket if the police see your car in a parking lot or even if you are driving it and it is not registered. - 21393
