Car Transport the Dependable Way

By Tom Kearns

If you need to ship any vehicle a long distance whether it be a sports car, vintage, SUV or golf cart, generally the most economical and smartest way to do that is to hire a service that specializes in this type of service. This service may be by carrier truck or shipment by sea or air. They will save you money, effort, time and wear and tear on the car and your psyche.

When you think of "auto shipping" what comes to mind is a company with some type of transport vehicle to take your car to the destination you specify, in the same condition as when you left it in their care. Most folks take the company's reliability for granted and expect their car to be waiting for them at the end of the journey. Company names can be deceiving. "Reliable Auto Shipping Experts, Inc." doesn't mean a thing. You need to research the historical record of the company to which you entrust your car.

As in almost any industry, most auto shipping companies are relatively small independent organizations spread in the thousands all over most large countries, owing a handful of trucks.

To ensure dependable shipping consider first the most basic factors of time and money. A flexible timeframe for the company to operate in often means reasonable prices, and most companies will then perform well, whatever the destination. Prices rise when you are pressed for time and the risk of delay rises.

The deal is generally set up with either a broker or a single carrier itself. You will find that some enterprising shipping company's now act as their own brokers. This being true, make sure that you know that you are dealing with the carrier that also brokers for himself and not a carrier that brokers it out to some unknown company..

Before signing a contract, there are two absolute musts for you to remember to do. First, make sure the carrier shows you a valid MC license and second, request a copy of their Insurance Certificate. You will then contact the insurance company to ask about the terms of this specific policy, what it covers and what it does not cover. A good, reliable auto shipping company will applaud your efforts because they have gone to the trouble to be comfortable enough to give you this information On your end, you want to be absolutely certain that that smokin' car of yours is guaranteed to be insured all the way to journey's end.

Looking companies up is always a good idea. Better not to be involved with companies which are not listed anywhere or unwillingly offer basic info about themselves. Check the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to verify they are indeed a carrier and not a covert broker-carrier.

It is, of course, not a silly notion at all to put all this work into a broker's capable hands and let him do the research and select a few reliable companies from which you can choose. A broker can get information that possibly you cannot and that may just give you the warm, secure feeling that your car will wind up where its supposed to be after a reasonable period of time and all in one piece. - 21393
