Locksmith - Useful In The Past, Invaluable In The Present

By Dave Anderson

The master craft of the locksmith is an invaluable service. It was important in the past and is ever more important in the present. Traditionally lock smithing was the art and science of making and 'defeating' locks. Today's lock smithing practice does a great deal more.

In ancient Egypt, the pharaohs of four thousand years ago surprisingly used locks similar to ones in use today. The type of lock found and dated to Egyptian times was a pin tumbler lock system. Locks today use the same methods in some cases for protecting valuables. These days it is best to a good locksmith in Scottsdale .

Some locksmiths will have a storefront business that they work from, selling their services as well as locks, keys and safes. Some will come to the jobsite itself and offer their work or trade there when needed. This is especially helpful in emergency situations like locking one's keys in the car. They can be hired by institutions like businesses with high employee turn-over or a tenant management business that has a lot of doors with locks to be changed. These professionals are also invaluable to the police as both assistance and investigative services. Or they can specialize in their craft and work just on helping people in homes and businesses.

People in this business are often called to make custom locks for certain situations. They might be asked to create a unique vault for a bank or business with important valuables. Where ever there are locks, there are lock pickers. When a lock picker or thief breaks through a lock by discovering it's combination or how it opens, that is called defeating the lock. With a custom built vault or safe, there is little chance there will be a copy of the vault obtained for thieves to defeat in practice for defeating the real thing.

Risk assessment is the practice of judging the safety of a situation for the valuables or the people involved. In today's world there is a high demand for security in many buildings and departments. A locksmith will excel in judging what a situation might require to be kept safe. Lock smithing doesn't require someone be adept in security matters; however, those who profess to be security specialists will have knowledge of lock smithing. By choosing lock or security systems that are multi-layered, thieves who are pressed for time with move to easier targets. And those thieves who are determined may not be put off forever, but will have a lot of work to do.

In days of old it was important that people define what civil society would share with the public and what it wouldn't. Lock smithing was one of the first fields to have a serious debate about full disclosure. Many strong debaters felt that sharing the workings of locks and how to put them together, take them apart, would create people who wanted to make a living doing such nefarious deeds. However, the opponents to this theory pointed out that rogues and thieves actually already know more than the common public could ever know. Full disclosure found its way from the locksmith to the politician pretty quickly when that philosophy was more thoroughly discussed.

The art and practice of lock smithing is a very old one. It is something in which people begin as an apprentice and slowly work their way up to accredited master levels. For as old as the practice is, it continues to evolve and change with the addition of new technology. It's important to remember though that for every lock, there is a locksmith. And that means there is likely someone picking locks, for good or for bad purposes. - 21393
