Classic Car Care Tips And Tricks

By James Ferrell

Owning a classic vehicle can be diverting if you're prepared for the upkeep that comes along with it. Many of us own and show classic cars. In order to show, the paint and chrome must be kept up. If you have a classic vehicle and you do not show, you could be tempted to neglect that extra care and Maintenance needed to maintain the classic automobile.

A classic car is outlined by the office of Motor Vehicles - each state's department may classify classic cars at different years, but usually, if a vehicle is twenty years old or older, it is a classic. Cars are generally categorized as antiques at twenty-five years. Most classic automobiles were made from metal. Since metal can rust, the classic automobile owner must keep the paint in good shape. Washing at least every two weeks and monthly waxing helps to keep the paint in good condition.

Classic cars frequently have a lot of chrome - the wheels are often chrome, as are the air cleaner and varied brackets on the engine ( they are O.E.M parts, added for beautification ). Chrome must be polished at least bi-monthly in order to keep it from becoming pocked. Once chrome becomes pocked, it will rust out. The only way to fix pocked chrome is to have it re-chromed, which is kind of expensive. To clean extremely dirty chrome, you may use carburetor cleaner to clean it, but it won't polish the chrome. Once the chrome is cleaned, be sure it is totally dry, then wax it with a top-end car wax.

The interior of classic vehicles, whether made from leather, suede, fabric or vinyl, due to its age can crack or tear easily, should you continue to have the original interior. Care must be taken with keeping the sun from baking the interior of the automobile to preserve the numerous material surfaces within the vehicle. If not kept in the garage, be certain to use windscreen screen on the car.

The dash pad in classic cars is often cracked from the sun. Employing a windscreen screen helps keep the sun off the dash, stopping the vinyl from cracking. If the dash pad must be replaced, it can be a boring project, depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle - or can be an expensive venture if you have to hire somebody to replace it for you. Also, depending on the vehicle, you may not be ready to get a new dash pad for the car. Also, for any vinyl or leather surface, you can get treatments in an auto parts store to rub into the material. These treatments moisturize the material and helps to keep it from cracking. - 21393
