Pocket Bikes - Why So Popular?

By Eric Wagner

If you said that mini bikes, or pocket bikes, as they also are called are just shrunk down full size motorcycles you wouldn't be far off. These small and sleek machines looks just like smaller motorcycle with a smaller price tag attached, which is great news for all kinds of motosports enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. A mini bike will have all the important parts and design choices of a full size motorcycle built into a frame only 2 to 3 foot high. Powered by either a gas engine or a electrical engine these little machines can be used for professional racing or recreation and are very popular among all age groups.

If you care about having a stylish machine that doesn't look like anyone elses, or simply like to customize your ride, the pocket bike world will make this very easy. To begin with, you can get the machines in a large variety of colors, patterns and designs. Add to that the ability to further customize by adding decals, changing handlebars and so on. The general design of minibikes follows real size bikes very closely. So a chopper mini bike will look like a miniature chopper, a pit bike will look like a miniature motor cross and a mini pocket rocket will look like a smaller version of a GP racing bike. A good price point for your first pocket bike would be around $350. You can get a pocketbike for much less than that, but then compromises will have to be made. Most importantly you will get a frame that is made from inferior metal alloys making it heavier and less sturdy.

You will probably have to ride the pocket bike on private property only as they are usually banned from road use. Check you neighborhood for places to ride before buying one.

As many riders unfortunately have experienced on their own skin, a pocket bike is not a toy and a fall from one without the proper safety gear can be very painful. Wear at least a helmet and preferably a full riding kit including pants, jacket, gloves, knee pads and shoes. While being safer than a real motorcycle a mini moto can still reach very high speeds. And being very maneuverable it can be easy to lose control of one.

I hope you will take these tips to heart, ride with the proper gear, and above all, have fun! - 21393
