How Active Crossover works

By Henry Woody

Crossovers are a very important part of the stereo system of the car. They are generally meant to filter the signal by allowing a particular frequency and send it to the amplifier to give a clear audio with maximum clarity. There are two types of crossovers passive and active. The passive crossovers have the possibility of causing loss of volume due to disturbance and are also considered to be hard to control and adjust it. They are placed between the amplifier and speaker. On the other hand the active crossovers remove the line signal and provide a better sound quality. The adjustment of the active crossovers is comparatively easier to adjust. Since the active crossovers play an important role in providing clear audio, this article discusses some directions on how to set up active crossover.

First the crossover is mounted between the system's amplifiers and the stereo unit. If it is not planned to adjust the crossover after installing, the crossovers are placed in back of the race panels and that option is considered to be good. The cross over unit is installed near the amplifier and so the access to control it can be made easy.

In the first step, the active crossover is mounted somewhere between the head unit of the stereo and the amplifiers of the system. There are two options of the location of the crossovers. If the crossovers do not have to be disturbed or adjusted after installing it, they can be placed below the panel of the dash. This way it cannot be disturbed. But in case the user wants it to be easily accessible for repairing, it can be placed below the seat or in trunk.

The active cross overs audio output is connected to the stereo unit's audio connections. The appropriate amplifier is chosen and then each cross overs output is connected to it. The necessary electrical connections are made initially. A 12 volt DC power is required for the cross over to run. The other essential thing is a power supply to the car's battery.

The required electrical connections are made. Since the crossover uses twelve volt direct current connection it needs a connection with the battery. Additional connections are to be made to the chassis of the car for the ground line. It is advisable to connect to the electrical signal that is switched on by the ignition. This ensures that the battery is not drained.

Then the high pass filter's crossover point is set at 3000 HZ so that it would be easy to send high frequencies like Cymbals and acoustics harmonics to the tweeters.

The next step is to set band pass filter. This is set between the low and high pass.

The final step is to make sure the system is set up properly. This can be done by playing some music and adjusting the filters in such a way that is comfortable to listen. Once these steps are followed the audio clarity is improved. Therefore these directions on how to set up active crossover would be useful for setting up the crossovers and improve the quality of the audio. - 21393
