How To Find The Best Rates On Car Rentals

By Jason Hall

In a perfect world, renting a car would be a straightforward process. Unfortunately, with all of the surcharges and fees that are tacked onto car rental rates, the process of trying to get the most for your money can get confusing and time-consuming. When a person needs to rent a car, whether for a vacation or business purposes, there is really no way around it, so it pays to be a smart consumer by doing extensive research and gaining a full understanding of the various added expenses that are involved. Before jumping into a car rental agreement, consider a few of the tips below that will help you realize the best rates possible.

The best place to start is by researching. There are many ways in which research for a car rental can be done. TO start with you can look on the Internet or in the paper for special deals or offers that are available. Once you have the offers you are interested in you should than contact these rental companies to get a "bottom line" price. This price should include all taxes and additional fees so you can determine which company is truly given you the best deal. You should also look on the Internet for customer reviews for each company to ensure that the company you choose is reliable and has a high customer satisfaction rate.

Bidding sites are another great way to get a deal on you rental car. There are many sites on the Internet that allow you, the customer, to place a bid in for a rental car and have the bid picked up by a company. By utilizing this service you have the opportunity to rent a luxury car at the price of an economy vehicle.

Having a knowledge of what additional services are going to be offered to you will also help you reduce the price of your rental. For instance all rental companies encourage the renter to take out an additional rental insurance in case of accident or damage. This coverage, however, is not always necessary as you may already be covered under your personal car insurance plan. Be sure to find out if you will be covered prior to renting your vehicle as you can save around $25 a day by not needing to purchase the additional rental insurance. Also, although a rental company will not willingly give you this information, anyone under the age of 25 will pay a higher rental fee. Therefore if you are traveling in a group the rental contract should go under the person who is the oldest, as this too will save you a large sum of money.

Never go with the first rental quote that you receive. Always get various "bottom line" quotes from various companies. You will be surprised to realize that prices can vary as much as 25% from company to company. You should also check with the prices for a rental on the Internet, as well as over the phone. Also remember that it never hurts to ask for a better rate. You will be surprised to find out that a company may be willing to match (or beat) that rental cost, that was given to you by a competitors company. Many companies also have special deals that they do not reveal unless they are asked about them. This is why you should always ask, the worst that could happen is that you are told no. - 21393
