Stock Car Racing's 'Silver Fox' David Pearson

By Roger Corneal

While there are a number of challenging tracks on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit, few have earned the fearsome reputation of South Carolina's Darlington Raceway. Known as 'the track too tough to tame', its shaped like an egg with a surface that shreds tires. Some of the best drivers--including NASCAR's 'King' Richard Petty never mastered it. David Person, on the other hand, dominated at Darlington. He won 10 races and won 12 poles--both records that will likely never be broken. He actually made the 'track too tough to tame' look downright easy.

David Pearson was born on December 22, 1934 in Whitney, SC"a textile town near Spartanburg. Like most of the locals, his parents worked in the local cotton mill and did their best to provide. David dropped out of school after the 10th grade to work in the mill, but soon quit that life as well--he was drawn to racing cars and began running at short tracks in the Carolinas. He ran his first race on 9/19/52 in Woodruff South Carolina. Within a few years, he won his first championship at the Greenville"Pickens Speedway in 1959.

Pearson never sought out stock car racing immortality, but some of his friends had other ideas. They began raising money to buy a car to race in the NASCAR Grand National series (the forerunner to today's Sprint Cup). With a patchwork of financial backing, David began racing a limited schedule on the Grand National circuit and was named the 1960 rookie of the year. In 1961, he became the first driver in history to win on 3 of the 4 superspeedways in the same season (Charlotte, Atlanta, Daytona). This attracted sponsors, and before he knew it he was a top NASCAR driver winning Grand National titles in 1966, 1968 and 1969.

The 1970s saw Pearson cut back his schedule somewhat, focusing on superspeedways. In 1972, he started driving for the Wood Brothers in the #21 car that he was to make a legend. In 1973, he won 11 races in 18 starts"an incredible feat even by todays standards. Through the end of the 1970s, Pearson won 43 races. In addition to his mastery of Darlingon, he posted remarkable numbers all over the circuit. He is one of two men to have won more than 100 races, and his 105 is second only to The King Richard Pettys 200 wins. Hes also second on career poles (113) to Petty. Head to head, however, he has a slight edge over NASCARs legendary King: in races where he and Petty finished 1-2, Pearson won 33 to Pettys 30. His 11 consecutive poles at Charlotte is a feat that will likely never be matched. Another record that may never be broken is his 18.29% winning percentage, as well as his record of starting from the pole in 20% of the races he ran.

In March, 2000, SC Highway 221 through Spartanburg County was renamed David Pearson Boulevard in his honor. He lives in Spartanburg to this day. Pearson still takes to the track occasionally--he and current NASCAR driver Carl Edwards were the first to race on the newly repaved Darlington Raceway last Spring. We should all hope to be able to run with a 20 something NASCAR driver when we're in our mid 70's. Incidentally, he got the nickname Silver Fox due to his prematurely gray hair and cunning style behind the wheel. - 21393

Convertibles: What to Do When it Rains With the Top Down

By Kate Kew

For this story to make sense, you need to know that my employer sells adult diapers. So it's not surprising that I have a few packs of these in my house. I almost always have a pack or two in my car too, because the company donates supplies to local medical clinics and homeless shelters and it is my job to do the deliveries. Now here's my story:

My father owns a beautifully restored 1969 Chevrolet Camaro convertible and he loves it more than life itself. Somehow, a few weeks ago, my kid brother was able to talk our father into loaning him that muscle car icon for a Sunday afternoon. My little brother picked up his girlfriend and came over to our home and we all piled into our minivan for a local excursion. Unfortunately my kid brother left the top down on the Camaro and - you guessed it - while we were gone it rained a torrent. We returned to find the floor of the vehicle submerged in over 4 inches of water. Right about then my Dad called to say that he was coming over for dinner and that he would be arriving in ten minutes.

My brother had already started bailing water with a miniature pink pail that my daughter had loaned him from her toy box when I suddenly realized that I had the perfect answer - adult diapers! I quickly pulled a pack from my own vehicle and we all tore into it, submerging the absorbent material into the water. Even though it was my idea, I was astonished at how effective this was. I had read about the absorbent polymers that are in diapers, but to see it in action is simply eye-popping. Eight diapers soaked up all that water in about 40 seconds. I used a couple more diapers to get as much liquid out of the carpets as I could while others used paper towels to get little drops here and there. Hair dryers finished up and were just being unplugged when Dad was spotted coming down the street in his old pickup truck. He still does not know about this incident.

So if you own a convertible, keep your top up when traveling through southern states. And if you want to prepare for the worst that can happen, keep a few adult diapers tucked away in the trunk or luggage compartment. If your wife or girlfriend finds these panties in your car, you'll have a good story to tell. - 21393

Learn How To Drive Properly In Record Time

By Nathan Lewit

In this age where the automobile is king, many can assume driving to be a given right. It is not, far from it. It is a luxury. More than that in fact, when you are behind the wheel of a car, you are in charge of a lethal weapon. Subsequently, when learning to drive you should ensure you are taught responsibly, from an accredited driving school or qualified individual. An increasing number of people are electing to learn to drive through crash course driving lessons. But would this be right for you?

Before deciding whether to opt for an intensive course however, it is important to weigh up whether a more traditional course could be more suitable to your needs. Spread over a number of weeks or months, many people can gain greater skills through this process.

On a more regular course, you will have greater exposure to different driving conditions. You will also be able to vary the times of the day you go on the road, and possibly have longer nighttime sessions - though these also make up part of crash course driving lessons. Some find that with an intensive course, it focuses their mind and gives the ability to concentrate fully at all times.

As mentioned above, being a concentrated process, learners on crash course driving lessons are put under quite severe pressure. This is highlighted even more if attending a residential course, where you are surrounded by all things driving throughout the entire week; morning, noon and night! If you can handle pressure, great! If you thrive under pressure, fantastic! If not, it is probably best not to put yourself through it - learning to drive is a nervous enough experience at the best of times anyway.

Because of the demanding nature of intensive courses, it is also fundamental that you give them your full attention. Having gone to a great expense to get yourself through the course, it would be galling to fail for whatever reason.

Having a life packed full of responsibilities too, is not recommended on crash course driving lessons. But who doesn't have responsibilities these days!? Perhaps it could be an idea to take some vacation time to complete the course?

Learning to drive in any form is expensive, but as mentioned above, the price of intensive courses are very much more expensive. For the residential courses this increases again; having to take into consideration all boarding and food costs of course. By having traditional lessons, you are able to spread the payments as and when you have a lesson. If your finances are an issue, this could be much the better option.

Being able to drive for the first time out on your own is a liberating experience. Suddenly you have the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want and with whomever you want. It also makes life a whole lot easier too of course; no more waiting for the bus in the rain, or having to make yet another call to mom and dad for a lift.

No matter which method you choose; be it crash course driving lessons or through the more regular, deliberate method, be sure to make the right decision. Driving is great, driving well is better. - 21393

Lean To Carports and Single Slope Carports For Small Spaces

By John Moore

Lean to carports or single slope carports allow for proper rain runoff and can let accumulated ice to melt and flow off the roof without causing puddles of water that can form on flat top carports. If the only possible location for your carport is next to your house or another structure such as a garage then you might find yourself limited in the type of carport you are able to build. Carports that need to fit in small spaces are generally restricted to lean to carports or single slope carports or a flat roof carports.

Sometimes multi slope carports don't work for many reasons. A major reason is appearances. The delineation between house and carport should not be clearly marked or it will look like the carport is not an integral part of your house. You want your home and carport to look as though they blend together as one. A carport that looks glued to the side of your house will not bring any long term satisfaction. Another reason related to functionality of the roof line. If you live in an area that has a great deal of annual snow fall you will want to make sure that the snow or ice will not gather between your house and the carport. In the spring thaw, the runoff melted snow and water will need a clear and direct path to escape to the ground. You do not want the water from the melted ice to puddle against your home. Exposing your masonry work to standing water is an expensive mistake.

Lean to carports or single slope car carports tend to look more natural and blended into your home than a flat roof carport. Matching the pitch of the roofs is very important. If the roof lines march then the two roofs look like they are meant to be together. If you are considering adding a carport that has a roof at a different angle than the angle on the roof on your home do yourself a big favor. Take a picture of your current home and print off two copies. Draw a carport addition with the same pitch roof as your house and then draw a carport addition with a different pitch than the pitch of your house. The difference in appearance is clear to see.

Flat roof carports have one distinct advantage over other types of carports. A flat roof carport can be used as a deck or a screened in porch. For some people a flat roof carport provides an irresistible advantage. Changing a second story window into a doorway is a reasonably inexpensive and simple task. A contractor could probably do the job in a few days. In order to support a deck or any type of second story structure the supporting posts in the carport would need to be able to be strong enough to handle an extra load. An experienced contractor would be able to help you figure out the new load.

You don't need to make the roof into a deck right away. Perhaps you don't have the money to make a deck this year. If you think you might consider utilizing the top of the flat roof in the future then you need to calculate the potential load and build the supporting posts accordingly.

Think seriously about what type of carport roof is suitable for your purposes, suitable for your location, and suitable for the existing house. A little forethought will make your decision even better. You may be happiest with a lean to carport or a single slope carport. - 21393
