Creative Use of Carports

By Samual M. Adams

The addition of a carport to your home can increase the value of your home while increasing the enjoyment you and your family have in your home. If you think carports are strictly for cars then you might be able to benefit from the wide numbers of uses a carport actually has. Of course, the vast majority of carports are intended to protect vehicles from the elements. However, some creative souls are using carports in other creative ways.

I friend of mine loves to entertain. His parties are legendary. He always manages to combine the right guests and food and his parties, big and small are always raved about. He lives on the west coast and regularly laments that he can't trust the weather to cooperate with his party planning. This conundrum is experienced by many that live in British Columbia, Washington State, or Oregon State. In a flash of party planning brilliance he added a double wide carport to the side of his house!

I don't think my carport has seen more than 5 days worth of car storage in it's life. Instead I used a really cheap and fast carport kit to build myself a fabulous outdoor entertainment area. I ran a garden hose to a sink and hooked up one of those nifty Lee Valley Tools tap extenders, and ran the drain to one of my flower beds. Roll in my stainless steel bar-b-q, and I have the most convenient kitchen in the great outdoors that I could ever wish for.

Carports can come in all sorts of different varieties. The most common type of carport is the one that attached to the side of your home or to the side of another structure. These types of carports generally have a single slop roof or a flat roof. The decision to have a flat roof allows you the potential to build a second story on top of the car port.

There are also free standing carports or stand alone carports. These structures are generally constructed away from the home and are generally used to store seasonal vehicles like RVs or farm equipment. Some creative souls have constructed free standing carports for use as picnic shelters. In this manner the carport is used much like a gazebo.

The creative use of a carport can really extend the living space of your house. With a few tweaks and special planning the carport could be used for vehicle storage during some months and used as living space during some other months. Consider adding a carport to your home - 21393

Picking the Best Radar for Your Car

By Michael Mock

Folk have different viewpoints on what makes the best radar unit for your auto. Of course, there are different advantages inherent to all the different varieties of radar detectors, and it comes down to what your wishes and wishes are. Use this guide to help decide on the best radar for you.

One of the first things you have got to balance is how much you are able to afford to spend. The best radar for some people is the most affordable, while for others it is the strongest and therefore the most costly. Think about how much money you have to spend and you'll be able to make a fast judgment on some of the available styles.

For example, the mounted radar units are always rated as being the best radar for complete protection. They are small and hidden away and they are extremely powerful, offering protection against all or most kinds of radar and laser detection. However, their price and their permanency are drawbacks that many people don't want to deal with.

Corded radar detectors plug into your cig lighter. For many of us this is the best radar choice as the units are really robust, and don't cost a lot of money. However, the drawback is the twine running to your outlet and the visibility of the unit itself.

A cordless radar detector is the best radar option when you want the flexibility of being able to move the unit from one vehicle to another. This also allows you to easily store the unit away in a moment's notice, without any signs being left behind. This will help appease law enforcement as well as protect you from thieves.

While these different styles all can be the best radar for different folks, there are several other technical considerations you must concentrate on as well . One of the most vital is the general sensitivity that your radar unit features, as well as its sensitivity to different wavelengths and styles of radar and laser.

On top of sensitivity, you also have to give attention to selectivity, which is just as important. You can consider the selectivity of your radar as the intelligence of the unit. It's what separates the real signals it is receiving from random electronic waves and other noise. Even the most sensitive radar unit won't be the best radar if it has poor selectivity, resulting in many false alarms.

You have a lot to think about when it comes to which is the best radar for you and your automobile. You've got to consider the price of different options, as well as the additional benefits that different styles have. The best radar will have a robust and broad sensitivity, and will also have a best selectivity to prevent fake cautions that direct to complacency and bother for you. - 21393

The Car of Tomorrow: Good or Bad?

By Ryan Chandler

The Car of Tomorrow seems to be picking up a lot of steam on the NASCAR circuit. This involves a car that resembles nothing about its sponsoring auto company, save for a sticker on the hood of it.

The parts come from a wide variety of auto makers and have little to do with the Chevy, Toyota, Dodge, or Ford sticker that may be slapped onto the front of it. While some like the fact that giving all drivers similar cars makes things more fair (so that the best driver wins), this can't be good for the actual car companies, as it removes the personal connection that so many fans feel to the brands.

These cars should definitely be more affiliated with their sponsoring auto makers. Sales of cars are often hugely driven by a brand's success on the NASCAR season, and I fear that a continued push in the direction of the Car of Tomorrow will force a disconnect between NASCAR fans and the importance of an auto brand.

If the cars look more like they are supposed to it won't hurt anyone. NASCAR would not have a change in fans, the struggling companies could get some more sales through the performance of the car, and people can once again have pride in their favorite automaker.

And how about the power trains? These should represent the actual auto companies too. Not doing this just makes things more unrealistic in my mind.

They don't have to run the drive train or any thing else just an engine available in that car or made from their maker. By doing this again it shows a difference between the makers and gives more people working for the struggling companies jobs, which in this time is needed more than anything.

On an unrelated note, I also took offense to last year's races, during a time where gas prices were at an all-time high, yet the cars burned through gallons and gallons like there was no tomorrow during races. Many fans I know felt this was done in poor taste, and favor a shift to ethanol.

Not only would this win the hearts of many American fans, but it would legitimately help out American businesses. Just some more food for thought relating to an otherwise great sport. - 21393

Keep On Driving Past The Service Station, You Have A DIY Hydrogen Generator

By Alexis Jameson

When gasoline prices rise, everyone starts to think of ways to save gas. The output of exhaust gases from the typical vehicle should concern all of us. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use water to fuel your car? For less than the price to fill most pickup trucks, you can build your own DIY hydrogen generator.

Just as the more expensive hybrid technology stores the excess energy available when a vehicle is coasting to a stop, the hydrogen generator also stores that excess energy. Most of today hybrid vehicles use batteries to store the excess energy that is just wasted by conventional automobiles. The hydrogen generator stores the excess energy by converting water into hydrogen and hydrogen oxide.

Both hydrogen and hydrogen oxide are very reactive gasses. They would both prefer to burn and produce water. When mixed with a little gasoline and put into an internal combustion engine, the result is power. The only exhaust caused by the hydrogen or hydrogen oxide gases is water. There will still be some carbon monoxide produced by the vehicle using gasoline, but the amount will be significantly less that for a vehicle that is powered by gasoline only. Hydrogen and hydrogen oxide add much more power to regular gasoline.

DIY hydrogen generator plans and kits abound on the internet. The first patent for a hydrogen generator was applied for in 1916. The needed parts are available in local hardware stores and are very simple. In fact, the wide mouth mason jar and plastic mayonnaise lid may be in your kitchen right now. In addition you will need assorted nuts and bolts and vacuum tubing. If you have to buy everything, you will spend about 65 dollars. You may be able to save that amount in two to three fill ups at the gas station.

Why should you build a DIY hydrogen generator? First it will save you money. Purchased prepared, these devices can cost up to 1000 dollars. Even that is a bargain because of the money saved on fuel. The DIY hydrogen generator will save you money over purchasing a hydrogen generator and will save you money at the pump.

Additionally, a DIY hydrogen generator decreases the emission gases from your vehicle. This technology could help clean the air for future generations.

A third reason to build a DIY hydrogen generator is that engines that burn hydrogen last longer. This means a longer time between replacing vehicles. - 21393
