HID Xenon Kits: Legal or Not Legal for the UK

By Ethan Melandri

HID Xenon headlights were first created in the 1990's. They were considered a sophisticated option which could change the appearance of a vehicle at night as well as the experience. Xenon is credited with 300 percent more light than the original halogen lights, and lasting 10 times longer. They are also cooler looking with the blue white tint. Thus the HID xenon lights became fashionable.

Cars fitted with standard halogen headlight bulbs seemed quite dull in comparison and so a market for retro fit HID xenon conversion kits quickly developed. However a constant question that keeps arising about these HID kits is are they legal to use on public roads?

The easiest answer would be to say that the HID kits are not legal, but there is always a degree of legal. So the answer is not as simple as all that. To really understand the answer to whether they are legal requires you to look at the legal requirements of the kits.

To provide this answer a look at the Department of Transport's statement regarding conversion HID kits is needed. The department stated that the headlights must have a self levelling suspension as well as a self cleaning option within the unit. These xenon HID lights must have the European standards E mark as well. A headlight is categorised as the bulb, reflector, and outer lens.

Furthermore, any retailer who supposedly sells "legal" HID kits with an E mark, self cleaning headlight, and self levelling option is not being truthful. Their claims are unfounded since the Department of Transport states any HID kits are not permitted when you are converting from halogen to HID bulbs. Therefore, it is an offence to sell, fit, or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

If you want HID xenon headlights in a car that has halogen headlight bulbs and you want to remain within the laws there is only one option. You must go to the manufacturer of your car to see if they have factory fitted xenon lights for your model car. You can then purchase the factory option and have them installed at a licensed factory. The Department of Transport does recognise these factory units as legal replacements and thus you can have HID bulbs on your vehicle.

The downside to this option is the cost. Factory option HID xenon upgrades are not inexpensive. In fact they generally range in cost around 3000. There is another option when it comes to having the xenon lights over halogen though. While you cannot have HID xenon you can have upgrade xenon bulbs. These bulbs are better than the standard halogen your vehicle comes with. The difference in the xenon bulb and the HID xenon bulb is that you do not need a kit for the upgrade. The xenon headlights are identical to the halogen bulbs you already have. The only difference is one has halogen gas and the other has xenon gas.

There are two top upgrades you can purchase called the Osram Night Braker and the Philips Extreme Power bulbs. These two options emit up to 90 percent more light and up to 35 metres more distance than halogen. They are also 10 percent whiter than halogen. The best part to this option is that they are street legal because no modification is necessary. You can install them without invalidating your insurance or getting stopped by the constabulary.

The upgrade to xenon bulbs is not going to be as bright as the HID kits. However the upgrade is legal, much better than halogen, and they cost about 20. If you want the HID look, but within the street laws, you can purchase xenon bulbs and save money. This money could go to the retro fit factory option or a new car with HID xenon lights as the standard lights. - 21393

Is water4gas A Scam

By Adrian Fletcher

The price of the goods we need every day seems to increase every time you visit your grocery store. Inflation is on the rise for over a year now. An economic downturn and a rise in oil prices is often blamed for this state of affairs. Indeed, the upward movement of prices is no more apparent than at the gas pump. With gas prices as high as they are, it's easy to see why people are starting to seek out alternatives to save money on fuel costs. One of the newest fads out there these days is something frequently called water for gas, or "water4gas."

Attractive as it seems, is it even possible to use water for gas? It is not technically possible to put water directly into your car to be used as a fuel. In fact, if you did this you would damage the engine and render your car useless. So does that make the water4gas technology a scam? In reality, the technology to convert water to usable fuel for powering your vehicle does exist and is quite viable, but not in the form that most people think.

The term water4gas is slightly misleading. The water is not the fuel itself, but it supplies the hydrogen and oxygen elements that react to increase the fuel economy and performance of the gasoline engine. Clearly, hydrogen gas is both cleaner and more efficient than gasoline containing ethanol and, in sharp contrast to regular gas, emits only harmless water vapor as a by-product.

Using water for gas comes from the creation of hydrogen gas, which in turn, an automobile uses to burn gasoline more effectively, thereby reducing the amount of consumption and emissions. By separating the oxygen and hydrogen atoms that make up water, you can generate an alternative fuel source for your vehicle. Here's an interesting fact: hydrogen fuel is what NASA uses to send space shuttles into space!

Most water4gas systems that are currently available online teach you how to convert water for gas to fuel your vehicle. You can also find Internet sites or even auto parts stores that sell kits to assemble and install inside your car. When you purchase a downloadable version of the water4gas systems you receive instructions on how to build a water4gas converter and will need to purchase materials to build it with as well.

It's normal to be wary that untested or untraditional products could be a rip-off or not live up to the claims. Simply typing "water4gas scam" into any online search engine will bring up pages of information. There are dozens of sites that recommend the water4gas system as an economical way to fuel your car, and another dozen that call the system a waste of money or a scam. Interestingly, there are a number of on-line forums that include active and spirited discussions about water for gas technology from not only its proponents, but also from those who strongly criticize this technology.

Whether the water4gas system is a scam or a truly revolutionary way for the average person to save money at the pump remains to be seen. However, it is interesting to note that major car manufacturers such as Honda and BMW have plans in the pipeline to produce hydrogen fuel cell powered cars for wide consumption. Honda's Clarity FCX, the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to hit the market, is scheduled for limited leasing-only availability in Southern California for the 2008 summer season. - 21393

What to Look for in a Caravan Insurance Policy

By Timothy Simons Grimshaw

Getting your caravan is insured is a vital step to take in order to protect you from any costs that may be incurred by accidental damage to your caravan, or by damage from theft or bad weather.

The majority of caravan insurance policies will cover any damage that has been genuinely caused out of the owners control by fire, flood, bad weather, accidental or malicious damage and theft.

Your removable belongings inside the caravan will also be covered up to a limit that would have been predefined in your policy (usually 300).

This possession cover is meant to cover belongings that would usually, in case of emergency, be left in the caravan such as furniture, curtains etc. However, money, jewellery and other valuables are not usually covered under standard caravan insurance and should be covered under all risk sections of your household contents insurance.

Insurance is there for circumstances out of your control, however you do have a responsibility to take care of your property to the best of your ability, for example by locking the caravan up at all times you are away from it. There will be no cover if you leave it open or if you leave your belongings out in the open.

Similarly, if your caravan is stolen and it did not have a wheel clamp and hitch lock fitted, there will be no cover.

There may also be some restrictions on the caravan site. Some insurers for example may insist that your caravan must be parked in a registered caravan holiday park, or that your chosen site is concealed by hedges or fencing around the edges, and so there may be different security requirements with different policies, it is worth thoroughly reading your policy through to ensure that you will be covered at your preferred destination.

If you wish to have you awnings covered for damage, then that is usually possible at a small extra fee, but usually depends on how old the awnings are. Typically, if your awnings are more than seven years old then insurance companies will not cover them. - 21393
